1815/2 50c Capped Bust Half Dollar Overton-101a R3 ICG XF45

1815 is one of the most difficult dates to obtain on a coin since the inception of the Mint.  The only coins minted with the 1815 date were the half dollar (Mintage: 47,150), quarter (Mintage: 89,235) and the $5 half eagle (Mintage: 635).  It was the only year since 1792 when no half cents, cents, half dimes, dimes nor dollars were produced in the same year.  This was due to the British naval blockade during the War of 1812 which exhausted the supply of metals to produce coinage.  Ron Guth relates that this makes the 1815 Half Dollar a standout among the Capped Bust Half Dollars – a rarity that is desired in all grades. What makes the 1815 Half Dollar even more interesting is that all are overdates, with the 5 of the date punched over a 2. Though only a portion of the underlying 2 is visible, it can be seen even on worn examples.
