Circa 167-149BC Macedonian Roman Republican AR Artemis Tetradrachm.

MACEDON (Roman Protectorate), Republican period. First Meris. Circa 167-149 BC. AR Tetradrachm (30mm, 16.89 g, 9h). Amphipolis mint. Diademed and draped bust of Artemis right, with bow and quiver over shoulder, in the center of a Macedonian shield; shield decorated with seven six-pointed stars within double crescents / Club; AP monogram and MAKEΔONΩN above, ΠPΩTHΣ below; all within oak wreath, thunderbolt to left. Cf. Prokopov, Silver, Period I.B, 578 corr./194 (O123A [not same die as O123]/R164 [unlisted die combination]); HGC 3, 1103. Lightly toned. SNG Ashmolean 3299; SNG Fitzwilliam 2342. NGC Choice XF, Strike: 5/5, Surface: 4/5.

The obverse die of Prokopov 578 is listed as O123, but this is incorrect; they are similar, but different. Since the reverse die used here is firmly linked to an obverse die paired with a variety of other coins in Prokopov’s period I.B, the obverse die here (and its corresponding reverse die for Prokopov 578 [R461]) certainly belongs to that same period.
